Great Truck Lovers Book!
My just 2 year old loves this book! It is easy for him to carry while he is on the go - and it goes everywhere!! He loves trucks and this is great for him!

Great Choice!
I purchased this book for our 2 year old, thinking he would enjoy it in a year or so. To my surprise, he loves it now! Be prepared to read this book numerous times at each sitting, and to make enthusiastic machine sounds!

Our 2 1/2 year old son has studied it for over a year now.
We had to purchase another copy because our 2 1/2 year old son has read and played with the first copy so much he has destroyed it. Yet it is still his favorite. It is a great book for little boys. The pictures are terrific. He now knows his construction equipment when we are out and about.

Essays

Authors: Francis Bacon and Michael J. Hawkins
Average review score:

The Renaissance Socrates
It's useless to dig for just one or two epigrams to stand in for the totality of Bacon's penetrating genius in the "Essays." Though it is perhaps fashionable today to detract from him in order to praise Montaigne, it should be clear that Bacon is at least as indispensable. As terse as Emerson is expansive, Bacon's "Essays" are perhaps the most truly Classical (in spirit) prose in the English language. Fans of the Leo Strauss school should have a fieldday reading between the lines of the essays "On Atheism" and "On Superstition"; for the rest of us, nobody can come away from even one of these essays without gaining invaluable insights. Though Bacon is rightly heralded for the radical newness of his pragmatic methods, he is ensteeped in history-- those mindful of Napoleon's dictum that history is the only true philosophy will certainly respond enthusiastically to Bacon's approach. From the post-Machiavellian insights of "Of Empire" to the pre-Enlightenment ethics of "Of Goodness and Goodness of Nature", one will find in reading Bacon's prose what the youth of Athens must have found in following Socrates: the presence of a benevolent, worldly-wise, supremely rational mind determined to show you the order of the world.

Priceless gems
A collection of 59 essays by one of the shrewdest bipeds (some would say a brilliant rogue!) that ever walked this stale promontory of ours . Sir Francis Bacon offers his views on a whole smorgasbord of topics ranging from Truth,Death,'Adversitie',Marriage & the single life,Love,Boldness,Superstition,Friendship ,Health,Ambition,Youth,Beauty to Anger & Fame. These are short pieces (usually a couple of pages) but packed full of wit & timeless wisdom ____you can dip into them one at a time & chew them at your leisure .These essays are the quintessence of wholesome English common sense .Read them leisurely over a cup of tea(or coffee) on a crisp autumn afternoon (as the trees turn color) to savor their distinctly English flavor. I happen to have a Morroco-bound ,gilt-edged collection of these essays which was an added treat!

a timeless classic
Along with Shakespeare's works, Bacon's "Essays" is the supreme achievement of the English Renaissance. Philosopher, statesman, author, Bacon made all knowledge his province, and in the "Essays" is to be found more worldly wisdom than in any other book. "My essays come home, to men's business and bosoms." And Pope penned the epitaph, "If parts allure thee think how Bacon shined, The wisest, brightest, meanest of mankind." These essays, though, need a gloss for the modern reader to understand Bacon's cramped yet erudite prose and Latin quotations, as is provided in Pitcher's edition.

Absolutely the best cookbook I own!
This is one of my favorite cookbooks! Every recipe I've tried is fabulous and I've made some of them so often that I have them memorized. I really love the Pan-cooked Pork Medallions w/ Apples & Cider, Strawberry Roulade, Red Roast Pork w/ Bell Peppers (on the cover) and the Broiled Chicken w/ Lemon & Honey. The Red Fruits w/ Foaming Sauce is very simple to make and very impressive to dinner guests.

The recipes are simple and use ingredients that you can find at any grocery store. Most recipes are no more than 5 or 6 steps and include color photos of some of the steps--how to cut the meat, folding in ingredients, etc. I love this because I'm a visual person and I like to see what I need to do instead of just reading about it.

There is also a beautiful, full-page, color picture of the final product FOR EACH RECIPE! This is wonderful because you have an idea of what the finished product should look like and how you can present it. I highly recommend this cookbook! It proves that low fat does not mean no taste or flavor!

Simple and Easy Cooking!
This is one of my favorite cookbooks! Every recipe I've tried is fabulous and I've made some of them so often that I have them memorized. I really love the Pan-cooked Pork Medallions w/ Apples & Cider, Broiled Chicken w/ Lemon & Honey, Strawberry Roulade and the Beef & Peanut Salad. My absolute favorite desert is the Red Fruits w/ Foaming Sauce. It's SO EASY and everyone thinks you spent forever making it.

Personally, I don't have any problems reading the text in this cookbook. Yes the print is tiny, but what do size text do you expect in a book that's only 6 inches tall? I really like the compact size because it's easy to take with me to the grocery store when I shop for ingredients.

The recipes are simple and use ingredients that you can find at any store. Most recipes are no more than 5 or 6 steps. Each recipie has photos of some of the more complicated steps. By complicated I mean they show you what size to cut the meat, how to fold in the ingredients, etc. I love this because I'm a visual person and I like to see what I need to do instead of just reading about it. looks great!!
I'm a novice cook, and this book is the cookbook that I refer to the most!! Mainly because there are huge pictures on every page! Detailing some of the steps, and the final outcome! It's nice to know what the outcome is supposed to be!! There are a lot of great recipes, including lowfat and crispy baked chicken!! It really works!! My whole family loved it!! Plus, it was crispier than any fried chicken that I had ever made!!

I'm ready to start buying more books in this series!!

The Munster Raid: Before and After
Published in Hardcover by Food & Nutrition Pr (July, 1999)
Author: Ian L. Hawkins
Average review score:

You Are There
Ian Hawkins is an Englishman who grew up in WW II surrounded by airfields in Suffolk, from which many of the 8th Air Foce flew their missions to Germany. All 426 pages are filled with stories of heroism, fear, horror and dogged determination of young men doing their duty with a professionalism way in excess of their years. This book puts the reader in all the positions of each crewman to the point where you begin to realize just what it took to complete a daylight mission in the early days of daylight bombardment.

It is a worthy tibute to the men who flew this mission, their ground crews, and the many gallant members of the French, Belgian and Dutch Resistance Organizations who helped those that were shot down, to escape capture via the "Comete Escape Line" to neutral Spain.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill: "Never has a writer managed to capture the intensity of aerial combat with a clarity that puts the reader in the cockpit in what was one of the costliest raids of the war".

I highly reccomend this book. When you read it, and if you are lucky to ever encounter anyone who flew on this mission, you will be privileged to be able to talk with him almost on an equal basis. You will feel as if you had been on the mission based on the incredible detail of it as it unfolded, as told by Ian Hawkins. Buy, read and enjoy

The Munster Raid: Before and After
In the annals of Aerial Warfare, distinct names bring a chill to the bone, Schweinfurt, St Nazaire, Wilhelmshaven, and Berlin (Big B). But on October 10th 1943 the 13th Combat Wing of the 8th Air Force engaged in one of the fiercest running air battles of World War 2. The target for today was MUNSTER. Ian Hawkins has chosen this particular battle as the basis for this excellent book. "The Munster Raid: Before and After" gives the reader a chronological view of the events leading up to the Mission and the aftermath. Unlike other books of this genre, the author puts you in the barracks, the breifing rooms, the hardstands, the cockpit, and the POW camps. You feel the tightness in the pit of your stomach as the fighters come through the formation, you witness the loss of a buddy as his plane slides out of formation or evaporates into thin air from a direct hit. You hear the concerned voices of Pinetree and the disbelief of a Group Commander as only ONE of his planes return. How does he accomplish this? Simple, by letting the combatants tell the story in their own words.

In this, the third edition of his book, Mr Hawkins has included information on the Bremen & Marienburg missions, events leading up to Munster, and the raid which followed it on October 14th, 1943. This book is an essential piece of 8th Air Force history but more importantly, the history of the 100th Bomb Group. On this unfortuate mission 12 aircraft of the 100th failed to return. Only Lt. Robert Rosenthal, with a heavily damaged aircraft, would bring his crew back to Thorpe Abbotts that day. The reader feels the stunned silence and disbelief that hung over the base that day. This book stands as a testament to the resolve the 100th Bomb Group and the 8th Air Force displayed in continuing operations in the face of such events. If you only read one book in your lifetime about the 8th Air Force, make sure it is this one. Reader beware, make sure you have enough time because you will have a hard time putting this book down. Maybe just long enough to wipe the beads of sweat off your brow.

Detailed History of a Momentous Bombing Mission
The target was Munster, an ancient walled city on the edge of Germany that up until that day had seen comparatively little damage from Allied bombs. But Munster was also a key city in the German industrial machine, and on October 10, 1943, the city was hit by a massive American daylight bombing. The Munster Mission has gone down in history as one of the most brutal aerial battles in history, and rightly so. In 1943, the American heavy bombers did not yet have effective long-range fighter escorts to protect them, and the German Luftwaffe's best pilots still flew. Many would be gone within a year, for unlike the Americans, the German pilots had no maximum number of missions and instead flew until either they were killed or wounded or the war ended. On this mission, the reader is there, flying through flak "thick enough to walk on", watching the lumbering B-17's tumble from the sky and looking for the parachutes, in the cockpits of American and German planes, in the streets of Munster below as the city is pounded by the bombs, trying desperately to escape from a plummeting plane, floating in sudden silence over the city under a parachute, trying to evade capture once on the ground, or trying to limp back to base in England as the ubiquitous English fog begins to hide the airfields. Eminent British historian Ian Hawkins, who as a boy watched the massive American B-17's take off from their base at Framlingham, has put together the definitive history of the Munster Raid. He has recorded the thoughts of individuals who were there that day, both in the air and on the ground, American and German, and woven their stories into an exciting, minute by minute account. At the end, he wraps up the stories by updating the reader on what happened to all the players in the tale after the war, if they survived, and the reader closes the book at last with a vivid picture of this important battle in the skies and the men who fought it, and a renewed appreciation of the courage and sacrifice made by men and women on both sides of the conflict. It is a moving, taut, detailed book, told for the most part in the words of those who were there, and is a must-read for anyone who wants to know what the air war in Europe was like. Highly recommmended and well worth the price.

Extremely useful
I used most of the techniques here to help me through college and my MBA. I didn't use all his ideas, but what I used was great !!! I always felt sorry for the students who had no short hand method. Every student needs some method. I have not come accross a better one. Teachers were always talking way too fast for most of us students - any shorthand method is an enormous help. Notescript does not use any strange characters or symbols. Once you learn it, it's very natural. I can not believe this book is out of print !!!

Notescript is far superior to "Personal Shorthand"
The principles are simple: easily remembered 1-4 character symbols for the 100 most common words & abbreviation rules for the rest: mostly omission of vowels. Thus: "/" for "and" and "\" for "the" (follows the word shape); "tt" for "that" & "ts" for "this." He showed how to adapt the system to the typewriter. Today I use it on the Palm Pilot keyboards. I echo the other reviewers: BRNG IT BCK!

This note-taking technique helped me get through law school.
Notescript was an easy to learn, very effective technique of "short-hand for the masses!" This note-taking technique helped me get through law school. I was able to quickly write down not only the important things, but also some of the other statements that helped "color" the lectures. Now, I have a daughter entering high school. It seems a shame that this technique may no longer be available.

Stonehenge Decoded
Published in Hardcover by Fromm Intl (November, 1988)
Authors: Gerald S. Hawkins and John B. White
Average review score:

Detecting From the Stones
The author is a Professor of Astronomy who chose to investigate Stonehenge. He concluded that Stonehenge was a sophisticated astronomical observatory designed to predict eclipses. The positioning of the stones provides a wealth of information, as does the choice of the site itself. If you can see the alignment, general relationship, and the use of these stones then you will know the reason for the construction. The author, and other astronomers, discovered the 56-year cycle of eclipses by decoding Stonehenge!

Stonehenge was constructed from about 1900BC to 1600BC. Appendix B tells how the movement of stones once each year from an initial fixed position will predict accurately every important lunar event for hundreds of years. This computer would need resetting about once every 300 years by advancing the stones by one space. Mankind generally used the cycle of the moon as a unit of timekeeping.

The most significant Stonehenge positions line up to point to some unique sun of moon position (Figure 12). Chapter 7 tell how they used an IBM 704 computer in 1961 to plot the Stonehenge positions (120 pairs of points) and calculated where the lines would hit the sky (p.105). Chapter 9 asks if the Aubrey holes can be proved to have been used as a computer? No, but it is the most reasonable solution proposed so far.

This entertaining and educational book tells about the author's investigations and conclusions. It is a classic science book for the general reader.

As usual the brilliance is found in the simplicity....
Put away all your wild theories and the inept investigations of amateurs. Hawkins has put the record straight for anyone bold enough to keep an open mind. The case is closed, the mystery of Stonehenge has indeed been decoded.

OF COURSE! Stonehenge Decoded made the pieces fit!
Where have I been, that I did not know this?
I have been to Stonehenge; the highlight of my
2 weeks in England, bought a good little book
as a momento; sat and stared at my photos, and
listened intently as documentaries described
it as an alien landing site, etc.
I'd go "hmm...aligns with the sun...
constructed by aliens...prehistory people
couldn't do that...magically formed by
Druids...hmmmmm." But never gave it serious
thought. It seemed too beyond analyzing; then
I saw this book.
"Stonehenge Decoded" from page one, gave
insight to my sleeping brain.I became totally
absorbed in the concepts revealed by
G. Hawkins. So simple, yet so profoundly
accurate. So meticulous were these early
peoples. I have a new respect and thirst for
how they lived that I didn't have before. It
took an astronomer to recognize what, to our ancestors, were so obvious. OF COURSE!!

I now seek out any book with info on Circle
Stones; some by Gerald Hawkins. History is
TIME travel to its fullest!! Here I go....back
to the future.

Unveiling Satan: Her True Identity Revealed
Published in Hardcover by H.O.Y. & Sons (October, 1995)
Author: Yisrayl Hawkins
Average review score:

A Must for Every Believer
This book is a must for every believer in Yahshua the Messiah. It exposes the false ideas concerning satan .Shocking but Biblical proof is offered by Hawkins of her identity and work on the earth. If you have courage enough to be challenged in your beliefs then purchase this book.It is one you cannot put down.

Eye opening; mind cleansing;and rebirth of Life
1-22-99 Any one seeking Truth? This Book is the most informative book I have ever read in my entire lifetime. The facts are proven clearly within the confines of the book and references are given throughout. Clearly we must look at these Facts and begin to understand why it is that we are in such a Chaotic state on this planet, as well as the entire universe. It is also evident that the Author has a gift of insight, being able to explain the intricate details that are written in a very easy to read and entertaining method. Never losing the reader by boredom. Don't miss out on this one as well as the new book The End by the same author Yisrayl Hawkins.

What did Michelangelo and Pope Julius II know that we don't?
The "R" rated cover of this hardcover book is eye catching. The sexual organs of Adam and Eve seemingly had been covered by leaves making a "G" rated picture. It almost looks like it was totally produced by the publisher for shock effect. The explanation on the inside front cover says that it was painted by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and sponsored by Pope Julius II between 1508 and 1514. Either they were "dirty old men" creating the Devil Serpent into a woman for purient purposes or they knew something most people don't, even today. This author apparently has revealed astounding and undeniable proof of the FACTS that have been hidden for hundreds of years. I checked out the color photos of the Sistine Chapel in a library and found the actual picture to be the "naked truth." The book also shows other pictures painted centuries ago that depict Satan as a female. As an interested skeptic,I also was shocked to learn that Satan is God and that the Creator and Heavenly Father is not God, but a Supreme Being known as YHWH (in Hebrew) pronounced Yahweh. This book will shock the average reader, as it did this reviewer who is also a skeptical investigative writer. It will make you revaluate your core beliefs. All is proven by ancient Hebrew texts translated into modern English of today without the "art, and thee and thou." There are numerous photos and illustrations that make for lucid explanations and historic reference. At times it read like science fiction, but then on the next page it documents everything said. If you are a "seeker" with an open mind and want to learn more about a true religion that is not taught today but prophesised to be revealed at the "chaotic end days" then this is the book for you. It is not Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Atheisism or new age religious mysticism. As revealed in the fascinating reading, it is the oldest true religious belief in the world that seems to be also the youngest that would be re-established toward the end of this century. It combines the old and new testament into a core belief that the Messiah and the Apostles taught. You just don't read this book, you study and cross check.

Foul! the Connie Hawkins Story,
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (March, 1972)
Author: Dave. Wolf
Average review score:

One of the two greatest sports biographies
I've read this book no fewer than a dozen times and would put it on a par with "Ball Four" as the two greatest sports biographies. It tells the story of a ghetto kid who is used and abused by the system who ultimately triomphs in the end. I recently had the honor of Connie signing my copy of this great book. The book shows that big-time college sports will off a player the world if he can play ball, but abandon him like a hot potato when he needs help the most. I find it extremely ironic that Connie's freshman coach at Iowa later went on to become the director of the NCAA. I can't recommend this book enough, especially for basketball fans.

Connie Hawkins- struggles and successes on and off the court
This book is about Connie Hawkins, an inner city kid from upstate New York. Connie is one of six children who live only with their blind mother. Connie struggled from the beginning because he was too weak to be in a gang, but yet he didn't make many friends. So, in turn, he played basketball, all day, every day. He fought through those years in the ghetto and finally rose to the top of it. He became one of the top prospects in all of the country. But from there, it becomes a battle. When a huge gambling scandal goes down, Connie ends up right in the middle. With no education and no self-confidence, the police are able to break Connie with threats, and he eventually gives in to them and admits to things he didn't do. This was my least favorite part probably because I knew at this point it was going to be hard for Connie to regain his status. As is happens, Connie is kicked out of school and then banned from the NBA as well. Connie knows only basketball and without it, he is nothing. After years of tearing apart the ABA and the Globetrotters, a lawyer friend has come to his side. He believes that Connie was wronged and he wants to fight to get him reinstated by sueing the NBA. It's only an outside chance, but some say Connie is the best player to ever live and that it's an injustice to not let him showcase his talents on the biggest stage basketball has to offer, the NBA. This is a powerful book that is hard to put down, it's exciting, action-filled, and it gets you involved emotionally. You find yourself fighting and hoping for Connie. It's an easy read once you get started and I recommend you try it out.

A comprehensive look at the rise of a living hoops legend.
From his difficult childhood on the tough streets of Brooklyn, to his first taste of fame as a schoolboy basketball star, to playground legend status to the Hall of Fame, the life of Connie Hawkins is a unique study of the vagaries of sports fame and fortune. After establishing himself as a once-in-a-lifetime hoop talent at a young age, Hawkins found himself unfairly accused in a point-shaving scandal while at the University of Iowa. Tossed out of school, "the Hawk" entered the pro ranks with the fledgling American Basketball League, becoming its MVP at the age of 19, and later played four years with the Harlem Globetrotters. But it is his efforts to fight his unofficial "exclusion" from the NBA (a result of those unfounded gambling accusations), along with the stories of his exploits on the dog-eat-dog playground courts around New York City, that really give this book its life. Writer Dave Wolf delves deeply into the thoughts and motivations of not ! only Hawkins, but others who surround him on both sides - friends and antagonists. In the end, Hawkins' entry into the NBA is a bittersweet victory as he gains All-NBA status with the Suns as a 28-year-old rookie with bad knees. His NBA career was short, but Hawkins basketball life is what legends are made of. Wolf's book covers all with insight and compassion. This is a must for any fan of the game, or a fan of the underdog spirit.
